Grades on our walking events
All guides are asked to go at the speed of the slowest walker within their group, but for the sake of your companions we ask that you do not over-stretch yourself and thus prevent yourself and others from enjoying the outing.
These guidelines indicate the levels of difficulty to expect on a walk.
Grade Easy
Shorter walks of around 3-5 km / 2-3 miles at a leisurely pace. These are as flat as possible, but paths may be uneven. Any event graded as EASY will not require you to wear walking boots.
Grade Easy +
Walking boots required. Footpaths may be rough, stony or boggy. Generally this grade involves lower levels, lakeshores and valley bottoms. The pace will be leisurely with little ascent.
Grade Moderate
Walking boots required. Footpaths may be rough, stony or boggy. Generally this grade may involve walking up to heights of approximately 366 metre / 1200 feet. A reasonable level of fitness on uneven and rising/falling levels is required.
Grade Hard
Walking boots required. Footpaths may be rough, stony or boggy. A long energetic walk on higher footpaths. Some ascents/descents may be quite steep. A good level of fitness in these conditions is required.
Grade Strenuous
Walking boots required. Footpaths may be rough, stony or boggy. This walk may be on the high peaks and the length of the walk could be up to 16 km / 10 miles. Also, the route may take you up and down various gradients, requiring a good level of fitness and stamina.
Walking Boots Required
Walking boots offering grip, ankle support and protection are required on these events as you may be walking over rough, uneven and slippery ground. We recommend that you have 'worn in' your walking boots before venturing out on a long walk. Our walk leaders can only accept participants on walks if they are appropriately prepared for the conditions.
